Some Facts About the Macau Region

Macau was first inhabited by the people from Guangdong province of China. Most of them were fishermen or farmers. Macau has been invaded and occupied by several invaders including the Mongols and at last the Portuguese. Only a few years ago, Macau became a part of the People's Republic of China. It has become a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China since 20 December 1999. Just like Hong Kong, Macau benefits from the principle of "one country, two systems".

The Macau region is more developed than various other countries in Asia and like Hong Kong is one of the most developed parts of China. The tiny region is growing in size and there are many buildings being built on reclaimed land.

The Macau region is not very large in size and it has an area of 29.2 sq. km. The main regions of Macau are the Peninsula, Taipa islands, Coloane and the COTAI reclaimed area.

The Peninsula has an area of 9.3 sq. km and is connected to Mainland China. The Taipa islands have an area of 6.7 sq. km. The Coloane region has an area of 7.6 sq. km while the COTAI Reclaimed area is 5.6 sq. km.

The two official languages spoken in Macau are Chinese and Portuguese.

There are good transportation facilities in Macau. You can find an efficient bus transport system and a lot of taxis. To get here, you can either take a helicopter service or get here via aircraft to the International Airport here. The water supplied here is purified. There are many places of interest for tourists in Macau.
