Something to Know about Colonia Del Sacramento

Colonia del Sacramento is a city discovered by Portuguese on the shores of Rio de la Plata in an effort to end the spread of the Spanish Empire which has its center in the neighboring city of Buenos Aires, located right in front, on the other side of the river.

Thus, the event forms part of the border fighting of the Crowns of Spain and Portugal, who sought to extend their territories beyond the agreements reached. Consequently, Colonia del Sacramento, from the beginning, was the greatest geopolitical conflict stage of the Rio de la Plata. These circumstances made it a haven of architectural styles, which the Portuguese colonial style buildings and stone houses with two and four water ceilings coexist with brick houses with flat roofs typical of Spanish architecture.

The layout of the city is of Portuguese origin and contrasted with classic checkered plane common to all cities of Spanish origin and legislated by the laws of the Indies.

The structure of the city responds to a military formation above all, streets are very narrow, angled, covered with wedge-shaped stones, with a central drain.

Picturesque, charming, and magic are some of the adjectives that are devoting to this small village on the banks of the Rio de la Plata and that because of its proximity, just an hour journey by boat, is filled with people from Buenos Aires almost all weekends. People who want to get away from the bustle of the big city and immerse themselves in the old town to stroll and dine in a romantic corner. This is the main attraction for many Argentinian people who cross the river on Friday afternoon.

The perfect start to any visit by the Colony is to cross the old Gate of the Citadel, which also includes the moat, the drawbridge and part of the ancient walls, continuing the magic Street of Sighs, which retains its original cobblestones.

This is a place where time seems to stand still for several centuries after looking out the remains of the wall that are still visible. Getting lost in the narrow streets of the historic neighborhood, wandering around them and be captivated by the old buildings and the air of mystery that surrounds everything in Cologne is certainly the least way to enjoy this beautiful city.
